Tasting notes

Made entirely from Gamay. Fine bubbles in the glass. Fresh aromas of raspberry, maraschino cherry, cream and almonds. On the palate the mousse is fresh and persistent with flavours of berries and fresh dough with notes of minerality and refreshing acidity. The finish is long with lingering notes of cherry and tart acidity. Enjoy this delicious Sparkling Gamay on its own or as the perfect complement to country pâté with wine soaked cherries. Serve chilled at 5-8° C.

Rick VanSickle.  For my money, one of the best new sparkling wines in Niagara. It’s 100% Gamay from the estate’s Whitty Vineyard, made in the traditional style with zero dosage, 12 months on the lees, and bottled with only 2 g/l of RS. It erupts on the palate with a rainbow of black cherries, robust plums, wild raspberries and roasted almonds amid a riot of bubbles that pop in the glass. It’s seductively rich with a creamy/fleshy feel until the acidity kicks in and drives the boat in a more linear direction. The smoky red berries are bright and cheerful and meld effortlessly with the minerals, toasted almonds and plums. There is plenty of pop on the palate all the way through the finish. Just a wonderful and very different sparkler you need to try.

93 pts - Carolyn Evans-Hammond (@THEWINEFIND/The Toronto Star) “Exciting with its wispy aromas of wildflowers, yellow plum and sweet cherry. The entry is full and vibrant, pure and saturated, but incisive and dry. Shimmering acidity and delicate bubbles pierce focused flavours of lemon rind, crushed violet, and stone fruit. And the flavour lingers.”

Vintage Notes

The winter of 2016/2017 was again mild, yet a cool spring delayed bud-burst. Once the summer finally started it was relatively cool and rainy. Luckily September saw full sun and heat warm the vines to complete phenolic ripeness. Harvest started late in mid-September, commencing with Pinot and Chardonnay for sparkling and continued with other whites and early-ripening reds. The beautiful weather lasted well into the fall, allowing for long hang time for later ripening varieties. Overall yields were moderate to high with very high quality throughout. The wines are characterized by both freshness and structure across the portfolio, with potential for enjoyable early consumption or the opportunity to cellar wines for the medium-to-long-term.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-harvested in the first week of September 2017. The grapes were transferred gently into the press and the free run juice was captured separately to preserve the elegant profile. Primary fermentation was kept cool and in 100% stainless steel. Malolactic fermentation was suppressed to keep the fresh fruit character in the wine. The secondary fermentation took place in bottle and the wine was aged sur lattes for a minimum of 12 months. After the lees was removed, no dosage was added.

Discover 13th Street Winery

Originally started by four amateur winemaker friends the winery was purchased in 2008 by the current owners: John & June Mann and Doug & Karen Whitty. Both families have deep roots in the Niagara community.

13th Street Winery evolved from a desire to create exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Niagara, while also providing a place for guests to congregate and escape; to relax and discover; and to experience and learn. Owners, partners, and friends Doug and Karen Whitty and John and June Mann share a common love of wine, food, art, and a genuine heart for hospitality. It was this shared appreciation that brought them together and inspired the vision for 13th Street Winery.

Both families have established roots in Niagara and a strong commitment to the community. Doug Whitty is the third generation to be operating the family farm in St. Catharines, which was originally established in 1908. John Mann has been involved in farming for over 30 years, while also building a very successful automotive dealership network in St. Catharines and the surrounding areas.

Winemaker l Jean-Pierre Colas

Jean-Pierre Colas is one of the most talented French trained winemakers in the business. His winemaking philosophy is quite simple.

He believes that great wines come from the best grapes grown in the best vineyards, whereas winemaking techniques are only utilized to supplement and capture the very essence of the grapes’ provenance and character. With this philosophy in mind, JP excels at crafting high-quality red wines paramount to the Niagara peninsula: Gamay Noir, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. Likewise, JP guides the production of exceptional white wines, including world class Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer.

In his home country of France, JP worked at the notable Chablis house, Domaine Laroche, where he produced Wine Spectator Magazine’s 1998 White Wine of the Year, an award he received for his Domaine Laroche Grand Cru Les Clos 1996. Also in 1998, Jean-Pierre was awarded the Best Wine in the Wine Enthusiast, Grand Cru Chablis Blanchots “Reserve de l’obedience” 1996 (99 pts).

Between France and his current residency at 13th Street, Jean-Pierre travelled and worked extensively around the world, including Carmen Vineyards in Chile, Bodegas Chandon in Argentina, and Oyster Bay Winery in New Zealand. He has studied and worked under a number of exceptional winemakers including Michel Givors in Morgon, Beaujolais and Gilbert Picq, and Michel Laroche in Chablis, Burgundy.

In 2018, Jean-Pierre received White Wine of the Year and a Gold Medal for Premier Cuvée 2012 at the 2018 Ontario Wine Awards.

13th Street is Sustainable Winemaking Ontario Certified Each vintage. 100% of the wines produced by 13th Street Winery are made from fruit sourced exclusively in the Niagara Peninsula with 85% or more coming from their own vineyards. Their very first vines were planted at the 13th Street Vineyard in 1976. In the years since, they’ve planted Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Gris and now have amassed more than 40 acres of estate vineyards in the VQA Creek Shores appellation of Niagara.
