Tasting notes

While it combines elements of both the old and new world, our Syrah leans more toward what you would expect from France’s Rhone Valley - hence the name. While its sibling Cuvée Violette showcases the floral, graceful and perfumed side of Syrah, Cuvée Classique shows the dark, savoury, spicy and powerful side of this noble grape variety. The wine is nuanced and elegant, yet structured in its youth.

In 2016, white and black peppercorn, iron, dark wild berries, black olives and forest floor form the aromatic and flavour profiles of this wine. There is a great balance between the components already albeit on the young side. Neither as robust as the likes of 2012 and 2015, nor as linear and elegant as 2010 and 2011. Balance is the word that keeps coming up.

Pairing

Centuries ago the black pepper spice trade launched voyages, wars, and epic tales. Today we suggest trying a black pepper crusted New York steak paired with this wine to fill the air with all that peppery goodness.

17 months in French oak, 40% new. This is floral with black cherries, some pepper and a touch of blackcurrant and olive on the nose. There’s a lushness and sweetness to the palate which shows ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, with a slight salinity and hints of iron and meat, as well as some white pepper. It’s very ripe, and sweetly fruited, but there’s some freshness, too.  This is the big brother to LVP’s floral Cuvée Violette. Tight and youthful, with more oak than the previous vintage which is poking through a bit at this young stage, but will surely be swallowed with a welcome rest in the cellar. This has the structure and potency, plus elegance and purity, to age effortlessly. Bracketed by firm walnut-laden sides, this has lovely brisk spicing, with more structure housing the black cherry, raspberry, graphite and leather fruit. Lovely showing.

Le Vieux Pin takes its inspiration from the finest Rhone Valley wines Syrah and Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, while embracing the specific terroir of the famous Black Sage Bench overlooking the valley. The goal at Le Vieux Pin is to make wines that capture the essence of French winemaking tradition, but with the fruit and character of the New World; wines that are elegant and focused, with great intensity of fruit. Though extremely limited in production, these wines have found homes in Top European restaurants and are available in minute quantities here in Japan with us now.

Since releasing their first vintage in 2005, Le Vieux Pin has captured the essence of traditional French winemaking, along with the bold New World character distinct to the region. Considered by the national wine industry to be a leading Syrah producer, the winery uses low input viticulture and non- interventionist winemaking to make exclusive vintages that carry with them a sense of time and place. These fine wines can be savoured nationwide and internationally, at select culinary hot spots, gastronomical institutions and fine wine merchants.

Severine Pinte

Severine Pinte came to Le Vieux Pin in 2010 with 14 harvests of international winemaking experience under her belt along with 8 years of vineyard management. Severine is a graduate of the illustrious ENSAM (Ecole National Superior Agronomic of Montpellier) where she acquired her Masters in viticulture and oenology, and her National Diploma of Oenology.After leaving ENSAM she apprenticed at the Cave de Tecou in the AOC Gaillac before coming for the first time to British Columbia to work for Domaine de Chaberton as an assistant winemaker. In 1999 she returned to France and worked a year in Bordeaux under the direction of Andre Lurton in Pessac-Leognan then returned to the Languedoc. For nine years Severine was head winemaker and viticultural council for ‘Le Vignoble des 2 terres’ in the Terrasse du Larzac terroir.

In the winter of 2003, she took leave for harvest at Frankland Estate winery in Western Australia and enjoyed learning a different take on her beloved Syrah and Viognier.Curiosity and the pursuit of new challenges brought Severine to the Okanagan and she brought with her an astute understanding of wine and terroir. Her favorite quote is from Jean Hugel: “100% of the quality of a true wine is already in the grapes, not in the cellars where you can only lose quality.”

For her, the Okanagan, with its unique terroir and cool climate, has always been intriguing.We are delighted to have Severine leading our viticulture and winemaking team; she is the perfect candidate to craft world class Syrah and Viognier in the South Okanagan.
