Tasting notes

les Villages' is a floral and mineral-scented reserve blend of older Pinot Noir vines from the limestone-laced vineyards of Niagara. This is sourced from a blend of Niagara terroirs but still has that signature perfumed nose that all Bachelder Pinots possess to go with savoury cherries, raspberry bramble, earth and light oak spices from neutral oak aging for 18 months.

Michael Godel.  Les Villages takes the Niagara ordinaire in regional appellative form and extends the olive branch to rise up and express an ordinance in commun guise. The expectation for fruit to seem more evolved or advanced is certainly not unusual and that it does with township charm and a farmer's honesty. The idea is Burgundian, of a village and its surrounding vineyards all owing to the central theme of people, place and of course, climat. This has charm, nary a moment of whole bunch wood-refraction and all the cherry fruit you could want. Delightful and humble for a non-invasive, non-confrontational, humbling pinot noir experience.

John Szabo, MS.  A bright, light, dusty, faded red fruit and floral expression of pinot, sweet and engaging, delicate and light. The palate is supple, silky, light and soft but with sufficient acid backbone to buoy the ensemble, with such light and fine-grained tannins. I like the finesse and delicacy on offer. Toute en finesse; for current enjoyment.

Chris Waters,(Special to the Globe and Mail), This bright and ripe pinot noir benefits from a large portion of Wismer Vineyard fruit that was originally set aside to be a more expensive single-vineyard release. Winemaker Thomas Bachelder felt it didn’t make the grade, so it’s adding considerable weight and intensity to this entry-level release.

Producer Description

In just over a decade, Thomas Bachelder has made a name for himself as a producer of world class, terroir-based, organic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Burgundy, Oregon and Niagara. With their two young daughters in tow, Thomas and his wife Mary Delaney have unwittingly become wine gypsies, following their passion to produce terroirrevealing wines from these two most noble Burgundian grapes.

Made with intention

They make wines from local terroirs using ‘wild’ (indigenous) yeasts, using organic vineyards wherever possible. Everything goes to barrel for long ageing. The intent is to make pure, suavely-textured wines that sing lightly and clearly of their vineyard origins with as little makeup as possible – wines that are finely-perfumed and tightly-wound, offering the classic refined fruit and textured minerality of the delicate silt, clay and dolomitic limestone-laced ancient lakebed terroirs of Niagara.

A little note from Thomas and Mary

We’re inspired by the love of our spiritual home – Burgundy – where the grapes we love originally evolved, where even the tiniest of vineyards are put separately into a bottle. Our aim is to help discover, quantify and name the Terroirs of Niagara, one-by-one, from west (just outside Hamilton) to east (just outside the “Old Town” of Niagara-on-the-Lake) – and to deliver their energy and their purity of spirit to your glass! Pull the cork and dream of the vineyard from which it comes!

Santé! Cheers!
