Tasting notes

Ruby red appearance with ripe raspberries and plums on the nose that are accompanied by complex earthiness and lightly toasted oak on the palate.

The whole cluster content is 60-70 per cent, really at the peak of style for Niagara wines and yet the nose is more giving and florally generous than you might anticipate. The fruit from Heather Laundry’s farm is full of grace and charm for ’17, in phenolic accord with all the other parts. Sweet palate presence confirms the movement and the results for this way of making pinot noir. Very youthful, with savoury stickiness and pulsating on the palate. Some chewy texture is a good foil and the length is granted. A top example that shows when your seeds and stems turn brown you can take the risk and add major complexity to your pinot noir. Drink 2020-2025 (92 Points - Michael Godel, WineAlign)
93Wineanorak (Jamie Goode)
60% whole cluster. Lighter in colour with fresh, supple raspberry and cherry fruit. Has some rhubarb and sour cherry character. Very supple and quite elegant, with nice brightness. (Jamie Goode - 93 points)

Appellation

VQA Lincoln Lakeshore

Viticulture

Known for luscious red fruit and subtle earthiness, Niagara Pinot is an excellent conveyer of our fascinating local terroir. This Pinot Noir starts life at esteemed Niagara grower Heather Laundry’s Lincoln Lakeshore vineyard, which is fully Certified Organic. Warm days and cool nights, accompanied by the drying winds of adjacent Lake Ontario, produce a Pinot full of delicious red fruit and refreshing acidity.

Vinification

Hand harvest from Heather Laundry’s Lincoln Lakshore vineyard in Beamsville. After sorting, 50-60% whole clusters were put into the bottom of the oak vat, then stemmed grapes were gravity fed on top of the clusters. Wild yeast and malolactic fermented the juice as gravity squeezed open the berries. After pressing and settling, this wine was aged in French Oak barrels – 12% new wood for 8 months.

Producer Description

Southbrook Vineyards is the epitome and evolution of Bill Redelmeier's love story with wine, the land, and all things “local.” The winery is situated on a 150-acre vineyard in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula wine region of Ontario, Canada. We produce organic and biodynamic wines that earn recognition, from critics and consumers alike, year after year.

From their purchase of the Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyard in 2005, the Redelmeiers committed their energies to sustainable viticulture. By 2008, they had created the first wine estate in Canada to earn both organic and biodynamic certification for its vineyard and winery.

Southbrook is the first biodynamic certified vineyard in Canada - They became officially certified by Pro-Cert Organics, Canada’s national certifier of organic food products, and by Demeter, the international body that oversees biodynamic agriculture. They are also the first winery to achieve LEED Gold Certification, continuing to garner other accolades, notably the Award of Excellence for Architectural Design and an Award of Merit for Green Buildings from the Canadian Institute for Steel Construction.

Southbrook makes every effort to live in harmony with the land. From their biodynamic, organic vineyard they produce fine age-worthy wines, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, classic Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays.

Ann Sperling - Winemaker

An inseparable team because their goal is one and the same – to grow the best wines that express their origins with authenticity and integrity. The team is led by Ann Sperling, Director of Winemaking and Viticulture. Ann was integral to Southbrook's transition from winemaker to winegrower, having introduced Bill Redelmeier to the property in Niagara-on-the-Lake that has become our new home. Her commitment to managing our vineyard organically and biodynamically is met with equal dedication by our Vineyard Manager Len Van Hoffen.

Southbrook also has the dedicated " Farm Team" with Linc Farm who take care of the sheep, pigs, chickens and more on the Southbrook Property.
