Reviews & Ratings

Michael Godel - 90 Points - Wine Align
Winemaker Ann Sperling employs the slow-wine method meaning the pressing of juice is done at a snail’s pace to avoid over-extraction of phenols. This keeps the bitters and tonics at bay while elevating fruit above fruit and integrating with all the fruit. It’s an October chardonnay from several sources, all from organic growers, including 70 percent mid-month harvested musqué from Lincoln Lakeshore and the rest from Twenty Mile and Beamsville Benches. All together these grapes get on one page with orchard creaminess and Southbrook elasticity. Drink 2019-2022.  Tasted November 2019.

John Szabo - 90 Points - Wine Align
Impressive aromatic complexity here straight off, offering some reductive/leesy/flinty minerality; good palate presence, above the mean depth and length. Mostly sharp citrus dominate, with low wood impact. Drink or hold short or even mid-term.

Appellation

VQA Niagara Peninsula

Viticulture

A regional blend (VQA Niagara Peninsula) of Chardonnays from organic growers, including 70% “later harvested” chardonnay Musque from Lincoln Lakeshore, and the remaining 30% from Twenty Mile and Beamsville Benches. Harvested at several dates throughout October, 2017.

Vinification

All lots were gently pressed using our “long-slow-gentle-low pressure” press cycle that yields delicate juice low in phenolics. Slightly settled juice was transferred to 300 L used French Oak barrels for wild fermentation, including wild malolactic fermentation, and aging for 7 months in those barrels.

Producer Description

Southbrook Vineyards is the epitome and evolution of Bill Redelmeier's love story with wine, the land, and all things “local.” The winery is situated on a 150-acre vineyard in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula wine region of Ontario, Canada. We produce organic and biodynamic wines that earn recognition, from critics and consumers alike, year after year.

From their purchase of the Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyard in 2005, the Redelmeiers committed their energies to sustainable viticulture. By 2008, they had created the first wine estate in Canada to earn both organic and biodynamic certification for its vineyard and winery.

Southbrook is the first biodynamic certified vineyard in Canada - They became officially certified by Pro-Cert Organics, Canada’s national certifier of organic food products, and by Demeter, the international body that oversees biodynamic agriculture. They are also the first winery to achieve LEED Gold Certification, continuing to garner other accolades, notably the Award of Excellence for Architectural Design and an Award of Merit for Green Buildings from the Canadian Institute for Steel Construction.

Southbrook makes every effort to live in harmony with the land. From their biodynamic, organic vineyard they produce fine age-worthy wines, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, classic Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays.

Ann Sperling - Winemaker

An inseparable team because their goal is one and the same – to grow the best wines that express their origins with authenticity and integrity. The team is led by Ann Sperling, Director of Winemaking and Viticulture. Ann was integral to Southbrook's transition from winemaker to winegrower, having introduced Bill Redelmeier to the property in Niagara-on-the-Lake that has become our new home. Her commitment to managing our vineyard organically and biodynamically is met with equal dedication by our Vineyard Manager Len Van Hoffen.

Southbrook also has the dedicated " Farm Team" with Linc Farm who take care of the sheep, pigs, chickens and more on the Southbrook Property.
