Tasting notes

Pale straw in the glass with persistent bubbles. On the nose there are oxidative notes of baked apples, but also fresh notes of brioche dough, lemon curd and mineral. On the palate it is rich but fresh with flavours of brown sugar, grilled lemon, white cherries and a touch of earthiness and mineral, balanced by firm acidity and a full mouthfeel. The mousse is fine and persistent with a finish of roast caramel and white cherry. Perfectly ready to drink on release either as an aperitif or paired with a variety of fare from fresh shellfish, rich risotto to bloomy rind cheese. Will also benefit from short to medium term aging to further develop complexities.

This bottle of bubbles is a show stopper for sure. The moment I took my first sniff of what was in my glass the complex brioche and citrus notes practically leaped out of the glass. While this has been aging on lees for 5 years – I can’t help but feel that this needs a bit more time. Don’t get me wrong, if you decide to open this now you will be very pleased to find a complex and rich bottle of bubbles that teases your mouth as it begins to open up on the palate only to be swept away with satisfying palate cleansing acidity. After the bottle had been open for an hour that’s when it really started to show it’s potential. Grab a few bottles and cellar them to enjoy from 2021-2027.

94+ points. Matt Steeves.  13th Street Winery’s Grande Cuvée 2013 is their ultra premium limited release Blanc de Noir (100% Pinot Noir) which is only produced in the finest vintages.  Produced in a zero dosage style, making it extra crisp and refreshing, and benefitting from 60+ months lees aging, with no oak influence, thereby preserving the natural fruit characteristics, with the added complexity those five years of aging on the lees adds in the bottle both in terms of flavours, aromas, and texture. Golden Russet apples, wildflower honey, biscuit, and a hint of ginger on the nose and palate. Beautifully crafted, the structure and balance in this wine are exceptional – its mouthwatering freshness makes it a fine candidate for any rich and creamy dish, and its got many years of aging potential if you can resist the urge to enjoy. Drink 2020-2035. Tasted November 2020.

94 pts - Rick Vansicle (Wines in Niagara) This top dog sparkler follows in the footsteps of the last time it was made from the 2007 vintage. It was on the lees for a full 60 months, did not go through malo and there was no sugar back added to dosage. Just wow! Such a delicate mousse with a beautiful yet complex nose of poached pear, mineral, citrus, lemon curd, brioche, bready/yeasty notes and a subtle, interesting oxidative note. It’s dry and austere on the palate with persistent tiny bead of bubbles and a rich, textured feel to go with a mélange of berries, creamy pear, baked apple, earth and smoky notes that all linger on a finessed palate and graceful finish

Vinification

Produced only in exceptional vintages, our Grande Cuvee is 100% Pinot Noir sourced from our Whitty Vineyard in Creek Shores. After careful manual harvest, the whole bunches of Pinot Noir are put into the press where the free run juice is separated out and blended with the first gentle press to extract juice but not colour or phenolics. After primary fermentation, the wine was then prepared and bottled for secondary fermentation. The wine was aged on lees for a minimum of 60 months during which the bubbles became smaller and more compact and autolysis, or the development of toast and bread character, took place. After disgorging, winemaker Jean-Pierre Colas felt the wine was in perfect balance so decided to not add any sugar to the dosage resulting in a classically dry sparkling wine in the zero dosage style. This wine was not exposed to oak and did not undergo malolactic fermentation.

Discover 13th Street Winery

Originally started by four amateur winemaker friends the winery was purchased in 2008 by the current owners: John & June Mann and Doug & Karen Whitty. Both families have deep roots in the Niagara community.

13th Street Winery evolved from a desire to create exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Niagara, while also providing a place for guests to congregate and escape; to relax and discover; and to experience and learn. Owners, partners, and friends Doug and Karen Whitty and John and June Mann share a common love of wine, food, art, and a genuine heart for hospitality. It was this shared appreciation that brought them together and inspired the vision for 13th Street Winery.

Both families have established roots in Niagara and a strong commitment to the community. Doug Whitty is the third generation to be operating the family farm in St. Catharines, which was originally established in 1908. John Mann has been involved in farming for over 30 years, while also building a very successful automotive dealership network in St. Catharines and the surrounding areas.

Winemaker l Jean-Pierre Colas

Jean-Pierre Colas is one of the most talented French trained winemakers in the business. His winemaking philosophy is quite simple.

He believes that great wines come from the best grapes grown in the best vineyards, whereas winemaking techniques are only utilized to supplement and capture the very essence of the grapes’ provenance and character. With this philosophy in mind, JP excels at crafting high-quality red wines paramount to the Niagara peninsula: Gamay Noir, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. Likewise, JP guides the production of exceptional white wines, including world class Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer.

In his home country of France, JP worked at the notable Chablis house, Domaine Laroche, where he produced Wine Spectator Magazine’s 1998 White Wine of the Year, an award he received for his Domaine Laroche Grand Cru Les Clos 1996. Also in 1998, Jean-Pierre was awarded the Best Wine in the Wine Enthusiast, Grand Cru Chablis Blanchots “Reserve de l’obedience” 1996 (99 pts).

Between France and his current residency at 13th Street, Jean-Pierre travelled and worked extensively around the world, including Carmen Vineyards in Chile, Bodegas Chandon in Argentina, and Oyster Bay Winery in New Zealand. He has studied and worked under a number of exceptional winemakers including Michel Givors in Morgon, Beaujolais and Gilbert Picq, and Michel Laroche in Chablis, Burgundy.

In 2018, Jean-Pierre received White Wine of the Year and a Gold Medal for Premier Cuvée 2012 at the 2018 Ontario Wine Awards.

Their very first vines were planted at the 13th Street Vineyard in 1976. In the years since, they’ve planted Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Gris and now have amassed more than 40 acres of estate vineyards in the VQA Creek Shores appellation of Niagara.
