Tasting notes

Bing cherry mingles with red and black cherry fruit. Aromatic herbs and cured tobacco leaves are also starting to emerge. The savoury profile in this wine is even more accentuated in this vintage. The palate is layered and while is still young and somewhat morphed into itself, it still offers plenty of pleasure in youth.

Pairing

Veal Osso Bucco or Tuscan Roast Lamb with rosemary crust.

The Super Tuscan is 57% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc and 8% Sangivoese. Aged in large format puncheons and Hungarian/Slavonian oak so the oak doesn’t overpower the wine. This youngster is certain to improve with age. Opens with an abundance of red and black cherries. Flavours of more cherry, cigar, black tea and toasty oak. Full palate with smooth tannins and that lovely long finish.
90Wineanorak (Jamie Goode)
Fortissimo is Super-Tuscan inspired, with 57% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 8% Sangiovese with fruit coming off of Osoyoos West and East Bench, the Golden Mile Bench, and Black Sage Bench. Fortissimo saw time in 225L, 500L, and large Radoux oval wood tanks, and a mix of French, Hungarian, and Slavonian oak (9% new). Savoury and grippy, with tobacco, black cherry, graphite filling the structural frame. Tannins are ample, slightly sticky, but predominantly firm, ensuring this has time ahead in the cellar.

Vinification

Fortissimo is our way of paying respect to the pioneers of Tuscany who challenged the traditions of winemaking in the 50s and 60s to gain recognition for their wines. 2018 Fortissimo is particularly charming for a young structured red. All the components are married seamlessly together. The large format puncheons and Hungarian/Slavonian oak are evident in the subtle way the oak is present with whispers of baking spice notes. Overall the wine has fantastic layers of fruit and savoury flavours.

Producer Description

LaStella is Situated at Osoyoos Lake in the sunny South Okanagan valley of beautiful British Columbia. Theirr vineyards produce great fruit that are crafted into such proprietary wines as Allegretto, Vivace and Maestoso. Each wine has its own story and to convey these unique stories they name their wines after Italian musical notes.

Vineyards

The best wines come from the best vineyard sites; this is “terroir.” The Okanagan Valley happens to be one of the best wine regions anywhere with its unique climate and variety of latitudes and soils.  Lastella is able to reflect the best distinct terroirs around the south Okangan, having aquired some of the best vineyards over more than a decade of exploration.

Severine Pinte - Winemaker & Viticulturist, Managing Partner

Severine Pinte came to LaStella n in 2010 with 14 harvests of international wine making experience under her belt along with 8 years of vineyard management. Severine is a graduate of the illustrious ENSAM (Ecole National Superior Agronomic of Montpellier) where she acquired her Masters in viticulture and oenology, and her National Diploma of Oenology. After leaving ENSAM she apprenticed at the Cave de Tecou in the AOC Gaillac before coming for the first time to British Columbia to work for Domaine de Chaberton as an assistant winemaker. In 1999 she returned to France and worked a year in Bordeaux under the direction of Andre Lurton in Pessac-Leognan then returned to the Languedoc. For nine years Severine was head winemaker and viticultural council for ‘Le Vignoble des 2 terres’ in the Terrasse du Larzac terroir.

In the winter of 2003 she took leave for harvest at Frankland Estate winery in Western Australia and enjoyed learning a different take on her beloved Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux originated varieties. Curiosity and the pursuit of new challenges brought Severine to the Okanagan and she brought with her an astute understanding of wine and terroir. Her favorite quote is from Jean Hugel: “100% of the quality of a true wine is already in the grapes, not in the cellars where you can only lose quality.”

For her, the Okanagan, with its unique terroir and cool climate, has always been intriguing and she strive every year to craft world class wines in the South Okanagan.
