Tasting notes

Maestoso is always opaque in colour and 2016 is no different. On the nose, one finds pronounced notes of dark bramble fruit, coffee, black cherries, forest floor and vintage cigar box. Huge mouth coating velvety tannins lead through to an astonishing finish lasting well over a minute. The structure and acidity of the 2016 vintage mean longer than normal ageing requirement before the wine is settled down. A monumental wine indeed that restores wine lover’s faith in Merlot. Even the biggest naysayers will be wowed. We have done our part, now is your turn. Pick up a bottle and get to know Merlot done Maestoso style.

Pairing

Maestoso demands the very best cut of meat available: a 30+ day dry aged, grassfed rib eye would be ideal. Simple preparation will let the wine speak to you and show you all that it has to offer

Vinification

Maestoso is the highest peak in the crescendo, that moment of realizing you are in the presence of majesty. Maestoso is our flagship wine and the jewel in the crown of LaStella.

Silk Gloves come on, no expense is spared, and we pulled no punches. Maestoso is the reason we get out bed at the crack of dawn and continue the backbreaking work till late in the evening.

Producer Description

LaStella is Situated at Osoyoos Lake in the sunny South Okanagan valley of beautiful British Columbia. Theirr vineyards produce great fruit that are crafted into such proprietary wines as Allegretto, Vivace and Maestoso. Each wine has its own story and to convey these unique stories they name their wines after Italian musical notes.

Vineyards

The best wines come from the best vineyard sites; this is “terroir.” The Okanagan Valley happens to be one of the best wine regions anywhere with its unique climate and variety of latitudes and soils.  Lastella is able to reflect the best distinct terroirs around the south Okangan, having aquired some of the best vineyards over more than a decade of exploration.

Severine Pinte - Winemaker & Viticulturist, Managing Partner

Severine Pinte came to LaStella n in 2010 with 14 harvests of international wine making experience under her belt along with 8 years of vineyard management. Severine is a graduate of the illustrious ENSAM (Ecole National Superior Agronomic of Montpellier) where she acquired her Masters in viticulture and oenology, and her National Diploma of Oenology. After leaving ENSAM she apprenticed at the Cave de Tecou in the AOC Gaillac before coming for the first time to British Columbia to work for Domaine de Chaberton as an assistant winemaker. In 1999 she returned to France and worked a year in Bordeaux under the direction of Andre Lurton in Pessac-Leognan then returned to the Languedoc. For nine years Severine was head winemaker and viticultural council for ‘Le Vignoble des 2 terres’ in the Terrasse du Larzac terroir.

In the winter of 2003 she took leave for harvest at Frankland Estate winery in Western Australia and enjoyed learning a different take on her beloved Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux originated varieties. Curiosity and the pursuit of new challenges brought Severine to the Okanagan and she brought with her an astute understanding of wine and terroir. Her favorite quote is from Jean Hugel: “100% of the quality of a true wine is already in the grapes, not in the cellars where you can only lose quality.”

For her, the Okanagan, with its unique terroir and cool climate, has always been intriguing and she strive every year to craft world class wines in the South Okanagan.
