Tasting notes

Distinct citrus and tropical notes give way to white flowers and black tea. On the palate, the acidity is balanced by ripe green fruit and more tea flavors, both herbal and earthy with pleasant white tannins.

Pairing

Pairs well with barbecue and fatty foods like cheese pizza, fried chicken, poutine as well as smoked salmon, bacon wrapped scallops and garlic butter shrimp.

Pours a luminous orange colour. Bright and relatively clean for a "natural" style, orange wine. A touch of effervescence on the palate and tannin give the wine quite a drying impression. Orange blossom and lemon rind on the finish of good length. A consistently clean and well-made example of this style in Niagara. Tasted November 2020. (90 points - Sara d’Amato, winealign.com)
Reviews & Ratings

90 points, David Lawrason, winealign.com
This pours fairly deep, slightly hazy orange-copper. It is highly aromatic with vermouth-like botanicals and clove spice, dried orange peel. It is light to medium bodied, tart, firm and juicy with considerable bitterness and some tannin. Tea and orange on the finish. The length is excellent. Tasted November 2020

Vinification

Estate grown Vidal grapes are shoot and cluster thinned to intensify character and were hand harvested starting on October 20th; falling on a flower day within the biodynamic calendar. The clusters were foot trodden to gently squeeze about 30% of the berries – everything (rachis and berries) was included in multiple 5-ton capacity, stainless steel fermenters. Wild yeast and malolactic fermentation took place simultaneously over an average 21 day skin contact period. Gentle pressing, then settling in outdoor winter temperatures were followed by bottling with the inclusion of some lees. This wine is free of additives, including no sulphites.

Producer Description

Southbrook Vineyards is the epitome and evolution of Bill Redelmeier's love story with wine, the land, and all things “local.” The winery is situated on a 150-acre vineyard in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula wine region of Ontario, Canada. We produce organic and biodynamic wines that earn recognition, from critics and consumers alike, year after year.

From their purchase of the Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyard in 2005, the Redelmeiers committed their energies to sustainable viticulture. By 2008, they had created the first wine estate in Canada to earn both organic and biodynamic certification for its vineyard and winery.

Southbrook is the first biodynamic certified vineyard in Canada - They became officially certified by Pro-Cert Organics, Canada’s national certifier of organic food products, and by Demeter, the international body that oversees biodynamic agriculture. They are also the first winery to achieve LEED Gold Certification, continuing to garner other accolades, notably the Award of Excellence for Architectural Design and an Award of Merit for Green Buildings from the Canadian Institute for Steel Construction.

Southbrook makes every effort to live in harmony with the land. From their biodynamic, organic vineyard they produce fine age-worthy wines, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, classic Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays.

Ann Sperling - Winemaker

An inseparable team because their goal is one and the same – to grow the best wines that express their origins with authenticity and integrity. The team is led by Ann Sperling, Director of Winemaking and Viticulture. Ann was integral to Southbrook's transition from winemaker to winegrower, having introduced Bill Redelmeier to the property in Niagara-on-the-Lake that has become our new home. Her commitment to managing our vineyard organically and biodynamically is met with equal dedication by our Vineyard Manager Len Van Hoffen.

Southbrook also has the dedicated " Farm Team" with Linc Farm who take care of the sheep, pigs, chickens and more on the Southbrook Property.
