Tasting notes

Bright ruby in the glass with intense aromas of candied cherries, milk chocolate, almond and a hint of vanilla with a touch of pepper and earthiness. Medium bodied with juicy flavours of candied raspberry, sweet cherry, vanilla and cedar with fine, ripe tannins, bright acidity and a refreshing but savoury finish.
Decant and serve in large Burgundy-style glasses, slightly cool (18-20oC).

Pairing

Excellent served alongside classic Bistro fare, grilled or roasted poultry and red meats, game, lightly smoked meats and semi-firm cheeses.

Cellaring

Unlike many wines made from Gamay, this powerfully structured version will reward cellaring for up to 10 years with a cornucopia of new aromas and mellowed textures.

This blend of 80% Whitty Farm and 20% Willms Farm fruit delivers incredible depth, and speaks to the 2018 vintage. While most of the summer was blazing hot, the fall was challenging and wet. That being said this should be a great vintage for the early ripening varieties like Gamay. This wine didn’t seem to get the memo about the hot summer months with alcohol coming in at 12.5% and bright acidity keeping this light and clean on the finish. The aromas are the full cherry spectrum going from tart sour cherry moving to notes of dark cherry and vanilla. The texture is broad on the back palate allowing the fruit flavour to bloom in your mouth from cheek to cheek. This was aged in a mix of new and used french oak barrels for 14 months – but the influence of oak flavouring is well used, restrained, and very well balanced. Easily enjoyed while young, but should relax by 2023-2026.

Forthright and extremely juicy gamay here from a reputable site that knows just what to do. Bing cherry, fennel and all the roasted nightshades, unusual for gamay but offering a great taste of sun-dried gastronomy. Chalky underlay suggests some fine tannins and the possibility of sending this forward for four to six years. Drink 2021-2025. Tasted October 2020.

Vinification

Sourced from our own Whitty Vineyard in Creek Shores and Willms Vineyard in Four Mile Creek. Sandstone, our top Gamay, is selected from new and seasoned French oak barrels after 14 months of ageing. Both vineyard were harvested in early October at an average of 20.9° brix. Crushed and destemmed before cold soak, followed by alcoholic fermentation and maceration in stainless steel over 30 days. After pressing, the wine was transferred to a selection of French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and ageing for 14 months. The wine was lightly fined and filtered prior to bottling in March 2020.

Discover 13th Street Winery

Originally started by four amateur winemaker friends the winery was purchased in 2008 by the current owners: John & June Mann and Doug & Karen Whitty. Both families have deep roots in the Niagara community.

13th Street Winery evolved from a desire to create exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Niagara, while also providing a place for guests to congregate and escape; to relax and discover; and to experience and learn. Owners, partners, and friends Doug and Karen Whitty and John and June Mann share a common love of wine, food, art, and a genuine heart for hospitality. It was this shared appreciation that brought them together and inspired the vision for 13th Street Winery.

Both families have established roots in Niagara and a strong commitment to the community. Doug Whitty is the third generation to be operating the family farm in St. Catharines, which was originally established in 1908. John Mann has been involved in farming for over 30 years, while also building a very successful automotive dealership network in St. Catharines and the surrounding areas.

Winemaker l Jean-Pierre Colas

Jean-Pierre Colas is one of the most talented French trained winemakers in the business. His winemaking philosophy is quite simple.

He believes that great wines come from the best grapes grown in the best vineyards, whereas winemaking techniques are only utilized to supplement and capture the very essence of the grapes’ provenance and character. With this philosophy in mind, JP excels at crafting high-quality red wines paramount to the Niagara peninsula: Gamay Noir, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. Likewise, JP guides the production of exceptional white wines, including world class Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer.

In his home country of France, JP worked at the notable Chablis house, Domaine Laroche, where he produced Wine Spectator Magazine’s 1998 White Wine of the Year, an award he received for his Domaine Laroche Grand Cru Les Clos 1996. Also in 1998, Jean-Pierre was awarded the Best Wine in the Wine Enthusiast, Grand Cru Chablis Blanchots “Reserve de l’obedience” 1996 (99 pts).

Between France and his current residency at 13th Street, Jean-Pierre travelled and worked extensively around the world, including Carmen Vineyards in Chile, Bodegas Chandon in Argentina, and Oyster Bay Winery in New Zealand. He has studied and worked under a number of exceptional winemakers including Michel Givors in Morgon, Beaujolais and Gilbert Picq, and Michel Laroche in Chablis, Burgundy.

In 2018, Jean-Pierre received White Wine of the Year and a Gold Medal for Premier Cuvée 2012 at the 2018 Ontario Wine Awards.
