Michael Godel.  A varietal estate grown chardonnay that spent upwards of 78 months sur lie is nothing short of dramatic, if not unconscionable. Not that no one else, anywhere else does such a thing but to do so, change so little and deliver unquestionable excellence is what dreams, expression and delivery are all about. If the Brut Reserve is Fillmore East than this Blanc de Blancs is Montreux, electric, mind-bending and so very exotique. João Gilberto, Marvin Gaye and Lou Reed wrapped into one, a sparkling wine of influence that only incidentally expands into mainstream visibility. This has stage presence and breaks fresh ground with creative sensibility, not to mention a deliciousness of flavour and mousse. That and 2012 in pocket permanently affixed to to the album cover. Drink 2021-2029. Tasted March 2021.

The Blancs de Blanc is the best of the best at Blue Mountain, made in the traditional style. It is chardonnay, all whole cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The second fermentation in the bottle sits on lees for 78 months before disgorgement. It is finished dry and aged another year in a bottle before its release. Precision is its best descriptor, but you can throw in some chalk, green apple, citrus, and hazelnuts finished with a whiff of warm baked bread. As well aged as this is, my experience is there is no rush to drink this. Get it well you can. Oysters anyone?

David Lawrason.  Aged 6.5 years on its lees this 100% chardonnay sparkler has all kinds of complexity and depth. It is bone dry, firm and crunchy with great acidity and minerality. The dried apple fruit is encrusted with a mix of garlic, toast and wet stone. The flavour focus never wavers and the length is outstanding.

Okanagan Valley

Viticulture

  • 100% estate grown and hand harvested.
  • Vinified in the Methodé Traditionnelle style and 100% cuvée, first press.
  • Manual thinning is practiced in the vineyard, which reduces the crop yield and produces a more concentrated and higher quality grape.

Vinification

Grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. After the first fermentation, the wines were blended and re-inoculated with yeast and bottled in February 2013. Secondary fermentation occurs and the wine is left to age sur-lie for 6 ½ years. The wine was disgorged in August 2019 and finished dry in the classic brut style. Lastly the wine is left for approximately 12 months prior to release.

  • DISGORGE DATE: August 2019
  • BLEND: 100% Chardonnay
  • ALCOHOL: 12.5%
  • DOSAGE: 4 g/L
  • LEES AGING: 6 ½ years

Producer Description

Blue Mountain is the wild and respected territory of which the Mavety family are blessed to be the guardians. As a family business with a strong connection to the South Okanagan site, the goal of Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars is to realize the potential of the individual sites of the land in which the grapes are grown. Overlooking and tending, the Mavety’s life work is an ongoing process of creating something simple yet powerful, to be expressed in the glass and enjoyed.

The philosophy of Blue Mountain is to focus on the potential of each variety, continually improving its range across Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, and Traditionnelle Methode sparkling wine.

Blue Mountain’s strong focus on viticulture across the site allows for an increased representation of individual terroir when the grapes reach the winery.

A deliberate refinement of the winemaking process has allowed Blue Mountain to more clearly capture the identity of each of the vineyard blocks. Through these unifying processes, Blue Mountain allows for a reflection of the land and the fruits of its labour.

Careful vinification prevents over-handling through the strategy to continually evolve the entire process – from the growing practices in the vineyard, to handling of the fruit and sorting, to minimal extraction, ageing, and racking. By focusing on the bigger picture, Blue Mountain strives to reveal precise, focused wines that are terroir-driven, regardless of whether they are a blend reflecting different sites, or a single vineyard wine.

For Blue Mountain, as the vineyards age, and new vineyards are established, the cycle of growth as a business and a range continues. The process is truly an ever-evolving reality, representative of the Estate, and bringing precision and focus to its continued evolution.
