David Lawrason.  This is a blend of 65% chardonnay and 35% pinot noir aged 6 1/2 years on the lees. It pours medium pale lemon gold with a very fine mousse. The nose is nicely lifted with fine dried apple, lemon, hazelnut and toast. It is light to medium bodied, lean, tart edged and intense, with considerable lemon and minerality on the finish.

The 2012 Reserve Brut was disgorged in August 2019 and finished in the classic brut style with a dosage of 4g/L. Post disgorgement, it spends another 12 months in bottle before its release. I love that the winery extends such love to this wine and wish other BC producers would consider similar ageing options. The blend of 65 percent chardonnay and 35 percent pinot noir, 6.5 years on its lees, seems to set this sparkler free. It’s livelier on the palate but with a wonderful reductive autolytic scent that entices. The palate is a nutty mix of red fruits and citrus with a strong lees undercurrent. Impressive and a real bargain at $50.00. It was a perfect match to lox and fresh cream cheese, but pairings with this bubble are almost endless. A Canadian treasure.

Michael Godel.  Generally speaking a joint effort between pinot noir and chardonnay, 78 months on the lees. Used every moment of that wait time and not a single wasted note emits from the restrained, tightly knit and prowess in playing power. The Okanagan Valley Brut Sparkling equivalent to the Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore, if you must know. The R D ’12 is all about varietal interaction and structural interplay. There is energy but at eight-plus years of age what matters most is the synergy, fusion and elasticity of its bluesy and jazzy way. All parts are fused, grapes, acids and extract, from there to here, with all necessary stops made along the way. That is why Blue Mountain takes careful and precious time. To do it right. Drink 2021-2027.

Vinification

  • 100% estate grown and hand harvested.
  • Vinified in the Methodé Traditionnelle style and 100% cuvée, first press.
  • Manual thinning is practiced in the vineyard, which reduces the crop yield and produces a more concentrated and higher quality grape.
  • Grapes are all whole cluster pressed and each variety is fermented separately.
  • After the first fermentation the wines were blended and re-inoculated with yeast and bottled in Spring 2013.
  • Secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle and wine was then left to age sur-lie for 6 ½ years.
  • The wine was disgorged in August 2019 and finished in the classic brut style.
  • Lastly the wine is left for approximately 12 months prior to release.

  • DOSAGE: 4 g/L
  • LEES AGING: 6 ½ years

Producer Description

Blue Mountain is the wild and respected territory of which the Mavety family are blessed to be the guardians. As a family business with a strong connection to the South Okanagan site, the goal of Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars is to realize the potential of the individual sites of the land in which the grapes are grown. Overlooking and tending, the Mavety’s life work is an ongoing process of creating something simple yet powerful, to be expressed in the glass and enjoyed.

The philosophy of Blue Mountain is to focus on the potential of each variety, continually improving its range across Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, and Traditionnelle Methode sparkling wine.

Blue Mountain’s strong focus on viticulture across the site allows for an increased representation of individual terroir when the grapes reach the winery.

A deliberate refinement of the winemaking process has allowed Blue Mountain to more clearly capture the identity of each of the vineyard blocks. Through these unifying processes, Blue Mountain allows for a reflection of the land and the fruits of its labour.

Careful vinification prevents over-handling through the strategy to continually evolve the entire process – from the growing practices in the vineyard, to handling of the fruit and sorting, to minimal extraction, ageing, and racking. By focusing on the bigger picture, Blue Mountain strives to reveal precise, focused wines that are terroir-driven, regardless of whether they are a blend reflecting different sites, or a single vineyard wine.

For Blue Mountain, as the vineyards age, and new vineyards are established, the cycle of growth as a business and a range continues. The process is truly an ever-evolving reality, representative of the Estate, and bringing precision and focus to its continued evolution.
