You can almost smell the warm harvest days in the glass. Sweet notes of cedar, tart black cherry and summer sage vault forward on the nose priming your palate for the flavour bomb to come. Cinnamon bark and sandalwood set the tone on the palate while a resin-like kirsch note lingers on the finish.

Tasting notes

Laura’s Red is a meticulous blend of red vinifera varieties to make a wine with strong structure and ageing potential but also with a core of good fruit and earlier drinkability. Expect fairly generous oak chocolate, blackcurrant, cherry, evergreen/mint and vanillin.

Pairing

Grilled flank steak with an authentic chimichurri sauce is ideal. The bold protein softens the structure of the tannins, while the herbs of the chimichurri sauce bring out all those delightful savoury herbs from the mid-palate. Not a carnivore? Might we suggest forest mushroom risotto with a healthy helping of shaved parmesan Reggiano?

Cellaring

Enjoy through 2030

David Lawrason - This blend is always among the more solid examples and fair value in Niagara. It is essentially a "Bordeaux" red led by cabernet sauvignon but with all five Bordeaux varieties in the mix, but there is also some syrah that rounds it a bit and brings a riper note to the nose. Expect fairly generous oak chocolate (19 months in barrel), blackcurrant, cherry, evergreen/mint and vanillin. It is medium-full bodied, quite elegant with some heat and considerable tannin suggesting setting this aside for about three years. The length is excellent. Tasted May 2021

Vintage Notes

2017 vintage started out as a difficult year. It was a summer of lots of rain and less than ideal weather, but by the fall, everything turned around and the sun came out and saved the harvest. Managing crop levels was important but that slow and steady ripening and a gorgeous fall lead to some wines with elegance and great ageing potential.

Viticulture

Fermented in separate batches in stainless steel tanks and individual fruit bins. Aged in oak for 19 months.

Producer Description

Creekside Estate Winery opened in 1997 in small-town Jordan, Ontario.  The Winery is run by a passionate (some say fanatical) group of industry veterans who have decades of experience in their respective fields. The team of self-described cork dorks love what they do, and have fun doing it.

Early on the darlings of the Creekside portfolio were, like the people who created them, a little outside of the mainstream fold; Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah are the signature wines.  Creekside has also developed a cult following for its Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blend and Ontario’s award winning Broken Press Syrah.

Despite being considered viticulturally off-kilter for the region these 2 grapes showed promise and the early successes spurred further investment in the vineyard and cellar.
