The Foreign Affair 2017 L’Eredita The wonderful thing about cabernet franc is that it’s a grape that translates a winemaker’s style and interpretation well, including that of the appassimento method. This is a wine that shows off this style with incredible gusto. L’Eredita (which means legacy, in honour of the winery’s founders) is 100 percent cabernet franc from the first vines ever planted at the estate and only four barrels of this luxurious wine are made. Expect seductive aromas of dried fig, cherry, chocolate, coffee and leather. The full, smooth flavours on the palate are beautifully balanced with its levels of fruit, tannin, oak, acidity and alcohol all combining seamlessly. Bravo!
Reviews & Ratings

Penetrating nose of cherry liqueur, prune, pepper, cured spiced meat, candied blood orange, molasses, sweet marjoram, and bruléed sabayon. Feel the alcohol in the upper nostrils. Rich adequate acidity to balance out the medium sweetness. Fruit paste and dried fruit flavours with subtle pepper character and a medium long finish. Alcohol well integrated. On day two, the oak seems more apparent with strong clove and vanilla spice plus candied fruit. If they made a deluxe hybrid of red and black Twizzlers, they would smell something like this. This really is remarkable and although not quite boozy or sweet, offers a gorgeous alternative to Vintage Port, Niagara-style. This would be excellent with duck breast or pork prepared with salty and sweet fruit sauces.

Vintage Notes

Cold winter temperatures on New Year’s Eve 2017 coupled with a very hot summer growing season and a wet fall, gave us a slight reduction in crop due to winter injury and drought stress in the vineyard. The warm growing season was a blessing for red varietals that weathered the winter temperatures giving very ripe grapes and an early harvest overall.

Viticulture

Hand picked and sorted

Vinification

100% Appassimento.  69 days drying time, barrel aged 18 months in French oak and American barrels.

Producer Description

1990 | Valpolicella, Veneto

Foreign Affair Winery founders Len and Marisa Crispino were living as expats in Italy when they discovered the wonders of Amarone, or 'Appassimento' wines.

The more they learned about this technique and grew to love these wines, the more excited they became at the prospect of bringing this incredible craftsmanship back with them to Ontario.

And so, they did.

2000 |  Niagara, Ontario

In 2000, taking a leap of faith, Len and Marisa bought 40 acres of prime farmland in the Vinemount Ridge sub-appellation of Niagara's Twenty Valley wine region, starting their journey to becoming trailblazers of Appassimento winemaking in Canada.

They sourced quality vinifera varietals from Europe, and after three years of carefully nurturing vines, 2004 became the inaugural vintage of Foreign Affair wines.

Today |  Niagara, Ontario

While the first vintages had many challenges with this approach, the big, bold red wines they produced as a result spoke for themselves, and so Len and Marisa persisted and over the next few decades, these wines become the benchmark for Appassimento wines in Niagara, inspiring many other producers in the process.

Today, The Foreign Affair Winery offers a unique and diverse selection of award-winning wines, all touched by the Appassimento process in some way, and many stories to share about the journey.
