Broken Press is one of Creekside’s most revered bottlings. Because of that reputation, we are very protective of our flagship product line, and aren’t afraid to declassify and skip a vintage if the wine doesn’t have the stuffing. Hot and dry 2016, on the other hand, was a no-doubter from Labour Day onwards, as both flavour and phenolic ripeness came around very early in the game. We resisted the temptation to go for dizzying sugar (and alcohol) levels, picked when we liked what we tasted, and managed to maintain the delicate fruit and elegant frame that Broken Press is renowned for.

Tasting notes

Quite possibly our most intense vintages of Syrah to date. The usual Syrah suspects are all there: white pepper, red fruit and black raspberry, licorice, and a hint of something meaty and definitely non-vegan. Weighty and generous on the palate, with black raspberry fruit riding on a train of fine tannin and moderate acidity interplay.  Backed-up with a firm structure and focused acid; you would be wise to lay this bottle down for the next 10-15 years and you will be rewarded for your patience.

Pairing

Shanghai stir-fried pork with cabbage, and sticky rice.

Cellaring

Enjoy through 2030

Michael Godel  Good years have got behind this syrah with a touch of viognier so that five-plus in there’s an open window through which to find the heart of this wine. A democratic vintage, fruit at peak, elongated and built to last, last longer than anyone who knows not what capability is in store for this wine. The tannins are just beginning to wane and with great acumen they have melted into the karst of what is truly a special BP vintage. A minimum five years remains and quite possibly 10. Drink 2022-2028. Tasted April 2022.

John Szabo, MS  2016 is another terrific vintage for the 'Broken Press', Creekside's, and indeed Ontario's, top syrah year after year since inception. The deep purple-red colour leads into an expansive nose of ripe black and red fruit, cold charcoal, pine needle, vanilla and other baking spices, still very youthful and a long way from a complete and evolved expression. The palate is mouth-coating, dense and rich, especially fleshy and ripe in this warm vintage, with abundant tannins well-coated in fruit extract and balanced acids. Very good to excellent length. Excellent wine indeed, best after 2022, or hold into the early '30s

Producer Description

Creekside Estate Winery opened in 1997 in small-town Jordan, Ontario.  The Winery is run by a passionate (some say fanatical) group of industry veterans who have decades of experience in their respective fields. The team of self-described cork dorks love what they do, and have fun doing it.

Early on the darlings of the Creekside portfolio were, like the people who created them, a little outside of the mainstream fold; Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah are the signature wines.  Creekside has also developed a cult following for its Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blend and Ontario’s award winning Broken Press Syrah.

Despite being considered viticulturally off-kilter for the region these 2 grapes showed promise and the early successes spurred further investment in the vineyard and cellar.
