About Black Bank Hill
Founded in 2017 by vintner Taylor Emerson, Black Bank Hill is a small, estate-focused winery in Beamsville, on Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment. The winery concentrates on limited-production, single-vineyard wines that express the character of its site, with an emphasis on careful farming, hand harvesting and restrained winemaking.
In the cellar, many wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured primarily in French oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The range spans classic Niagara varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Viognier, Syrah and the Rhône-inspired Liberté, a blend of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Production is often tiny, with some cuvées measured in only a few dozen cases.
Black Bank Hill has quickly established itself among Canada’s most exciting small wineries. At the 2026 National Wine Awards of Canada, it was named Best Performing Small Winery, with its 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon receiving Platinum and its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc all earning Gold medals.
What makes the wines particularly compelling is their combination of concentration and freshness: distinctly Niagara in their acidity and structure, yet with an elegance and restraint that will be familiar to lovers of fine European wines.

| Wine Maker | Jonathan McLean — Winemaker Ontario-born Jonathan McLean brings an unusual combination of scientific training and extensive West Coast winemaking experience to Black Bank Hill. After studying biochemistry at Dalhousie University, he pursued wine studies through Brock University’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) before spending more than a decade making wine in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. His experience included acclaimed producers such as Tantalus, CedarCreek, Le Vieux Pin, LaStella and Culmina. McLean returned to Ontario in 2021 to join his cousin, Black Bank Hill founder Taylor Emerson, as the estate’s winemaker and viticulturist. His approach begins in the vineyard: low yields, careful farming and high-quality fruit allow him to keep intervention in the cellar to a minimum, with native-yeast fermentation and restrained processing playing important roles. His Okanagan experience gives the wines a distinctive dimension within Niagara. McLean has described the portfolio as being constructed almost like a chef’s tasting menu, with each wine intended to express a different aspect of the vineyard and provide its own experience. Pale lemon colour. Aromas of pear, grapefruit, chamomile, white peach and orange liqueur. The palate continues with apricot, orange marmalade, lime, dried ginger and marzipan. Medium-plus in weight with balanced acidity, the wine shows a rounded and creamy mouthfeel framed by a light toastiness showing potential for the fruit and weight to continue to flesh out with age in bottle.
Dark ruby in colour. Aromas of cherry, blueberry, plum, raspberry, eucalyptus, violet, jalapeño pepper, with wild bramble, cassis, roasted red pepper, thyme, graphite, kalamata olive and cocoa, on the palate. Medium-plus in body and acidity and ripe and fine tannins, with an exceptional energy and finish to this wine. Already very pleasurable upon release but will benefit from further cellar/bottle aging. Peak drinking window from 2028+
Medium garnet colour. The nose reveals cherry, ripe strawberry, rhubarb, raspberry and liquorice. The palate continues with sassafras, blood-orange, loam, pastrami, bergamot, star-anise, clove, nutmeg. Medium-bodied with medium acidity and an elegant finish of plentiful but very fine tannins which slowly recede across the palate. A very fine wine, showing superb balance with many years ahead of it.
50% viognier, 25% marsanne and 25% roussanne grown and hand-harvested. Bright straw colour. Aromas of white peach, preserved lemon, jasmine and lavender. The palate continues with bosc pear, melon, passion fruit, gardenia, herbs de Provence and anise. A similar creamy mid-palate to the estate viognier bottling, however the marsanne component brings a heightened level of minerality and structure to this wine. Medium-plus bodied in weight with good acidity, the wine shows great concentration and length of finish.
Medium golden straw colour. Aromas of quince, Meyer lemon, brioche, caramel, oak. A rich and elegant palate continues with layered flavours poached pear, clover honey, yellow apple, lemon meringue pie, paw paw, and pineapple. Full-bodied, medium-plus acidity, with a very long finish.
Deep purple in colour with perfumed aromas of strawberry, cassis, red pepper and cocoa. The textured palate continues with layered flavours of raspberry, blackberry, plum, thyme, five-spice, clove and dark chocolate. Medium weight in body with bright acidity, the tannins are neatly woven within the concentrated and savoury fruit profile of this wine and will age positively, developing character and nuance over many years to come.
